SPEAKERS NOTES FOR ELECTION SPEECH ON SHARPEVILLE DAY

21 March 1994

21 March is known worldwide as Sharpville Day.

Today we gather to:

• Remember those who have died.
• Remember those who have been maimed.
• Say that a Sharpeville must never happen again in our country.
• To call and work for Peace, Justice and a better life for all.

Many evil things have been happening that has led to violence and death.

ANC has always said:

• Third force existed
• Some police and security forces are fanning violence
• Only a democratic government can deal with this problem.

Goldstone Commission has:

• Brought many things to light.
• Shown that some high ranking police are not serving peace and protecting people as is their duty.
• Also revealed that our Police do have some courageous people who want peace and justice.

The ANC wants to work with those who wish to serve peace and justice.

The ANC knows:

• The majority of the police - White, African, Coloured and Indian want peace.
• By working together we can build a better life and ensure peace in our country.

Today many families have:

• No fathers 
• No sons 
• No daughters 
• No friends

Over 18 000 people have died.

I say today, this must stop.

The National Party has to take responsibility.

It was the Government under which all this has happened.

But we in the ANC want to:

• Bring Peace 
• Bring Justice 
• Bring a Better Life for All

We have a plan to do this.

We have a responsibility.

We have a duty.

We are tired of finger pointing.

We want to deal with violence and crime from whatever quarter it comes.

We have the will.

We have the plan.

Our plan to build peace includes:

• promoting political tolerance.
• making our police work with communities.
• decreasing the number of guns in our country.
• making our police and security forces reflect our people in all ranks.
• make sure government properly controls the police.

But the enemies of peace are also:

• Unemployment
• Poverty
• Illiteracy
• Bad living conditions

To support and build peace we must improve people's lives.

To build a better life we plan to:

• Create 2.5 million jobs
• Build 1 million houses
• Provide 10 years of free schooling
• Bring electricity to 2.5 million houses in 5 years

By doing this we will be able to bring peace, peace, justice and a better life.

Because of National Party Government:

• 5 million people unemployed.
• They still spend 3 times more on a white child's education than Coloured, Indian and African.

NP cannot be trusted with future.

On 27 April you can change this.

Only a democratic ANC government will be able to :

• protect people
• be legitimate
• have support of people

Let us work together.

Let us implement the ANC plan for a better life.
