- TRANSPORT
Achievements for South African Women
- In South Africa the majority of transport users are African women. Women
travel great distances to get to work or to shopping areas. Women who
work in traditionally white areas face particular problems of access to transport.
The Department is trying to address this.
Policies and Legislation
- The White Paper on National Transport Policy 1996: As part of the general
vision set out in the white paper, transport is recognised as a basic
need and as a priority area for socio-economic development. The broad vision
is to provide a safe, reliable and efficient transport system, recognising
that
in many rural and urban areas the current system is inadequate to meet
basic transport needs. Performance indicators will be developed for the different
types of infrastructure to measure the extent to which the needs of all
citizens
are met.
