18. PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

    Internal Achievements

    • The Minister is a woman.
    • Of the 40 posts in the Department, women fill 21
    • A Gender Committee has been formed, chaired by the Chief Director: Office for Public Enterprises. The Committee is in the process of formulating a gender policy, and related legislation.
    • Members of the Committee attend meetings with other organisations and institutions concerning gender issues.
    • Attention is being given to budget matters to enable the Committee to function effectively.

Achievements for South African Women

Policies and legislation

• Currently the policy is reviewed and was due for circulation in August 2003.
• The Sexual Harassment Policy was developed and adopted by MANCO.

Sexual Harassment workshop was held for managers on 25 May 2001.

Programmes and Activities

• Gender Sensitisation Workshop was conducted with the aim of the creating awareness on gender issues for departmental personnel. It was also to expose participants to common gender analysis strategies and how international frameworks like the Beijing Platform of Action and CEDAW can be incorporated into the work of the department using the OSW clusters.
• A Sexual Harassment workshop has been held
• The Gender Committee received training on the National Gender Policy.
• A workshop on domestic violence was held for staff. The workshop was aimed at sensitising staff on domestic violence issues and enabling them to deal with these issues.
