ANC condemns violent disruption of the Lusikisiki meeting

17 November 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) strongly condemns the weekend violence outside a hall at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape where an ANC sub-regional general meeting addressed by ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Derek Hanekom and Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) member Xolile Nqatha, was disrupted.

We regret the shooting incident, which led to – at least eight people – being injured. One had to be rushed to Kokstad Hospital and others were sent to the St Elizabeth Hospital.

We also wish to thank the police for their swift action in apprehending four people suspected of being behind the violence.

In line with our determination to build a strong movement, an ANC NEC and Eastern Cape PEC delegation will next week visit the area to address challenges, which include political intolerance, and factionalism behind the in-fighting.

The ANC will take appropriate action against those who continue to engage in acts of destabilising its structures. We are committed to ensure that ANC programmes and effective functioning of our structures in the Ngquza-Hill sub-region or elsewhere in the country is not disrupted by criminal elements or factions within our ranks.
