ANC congratulates Frelimo On Elections Victory

12 November 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) congratulates Mozambican President Armando Guebuza and the ruling Frelimo for a landslide elections victory.

The re-election of comrade Guebuza as President of the Republic of Mozambique for the next five years indicates the confidence the people of that country have on Frelimo - the party that led them to independence in 1975. Free and fair elections – as seen in Mozambique – can only serve as a good barometer to determine the deepening of constitutional democracy in any country.

Frelimo and the ANC share historical ties borne out of struggle against apartheid, colonial rule, fascist regimes and their surrogates.

When Frelimo liberated Mozambique, it became possible for cadres of our military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) to obtain sanctuary in that country to pursue a struggle to free South Africa.

Today, both the ANC and Frelimo continue to contribute meaningfully to the shaping and development of a democratic and prosperous 21st century in our respective countries and Southern Africa, characterised by peace, freedom and humanity.

Frelimo’s triumph in the elections is also a fitting tribute to struggle heroes - the late presidents Samora Machel, Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane and countless other cadres of our movement - who laid down their lives to ensure freedom for the people of Mozambique and South Africa.
