26 March 2009
The results of by-elections held yesterday (25 Mach 2009) in a number of different provinces confirm the strength in ANC support in areas that it won in the 2006 local government elections.
In a number of hotly-contested campaigns, the ANC retained all of the seats it held in Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, North West, Gauteng and Limpopo. These results underline the point that the ANC remains the only party with firm support across the country.
The ANC is particularly impressed with the high levels of voter turnout, being above the norm for by-elections in the majority of wards. The ANC looks forward to a highly successful general election on 22 April with high levels of interest and participation.
