The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the announcement by the President of the Republic, Kgalema Motlanthe of 22 April 2009 as the date for this year's elections.
As these will be our fourth democratic elections in the country, we call on all parties to recommit themselves to working hard in ensuring that we create a climate and an atmosphere of political tolerance. The holding of the elections will once again signal another important milestone in the history of constitutional democracy in South Africa.
We concur with the sentiments expressed by the President of the Republic in emphasising the respect which should be accorded to all political parties to campaign in a politically-free atmosphere at all times.
