ANC STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ANDREW MASONDO

20 April 2008

The African National Congress is deeply saddened by the death this morning (Sunday 20 April 2008) of General Andrew Masondo, a distinguished veteran of the South African liberation struggle.

Masondo dedicated his life to the cause of the South African people, having served as a soldier since the early years of Umkhonto we Sizwe. A dedicated freedom fighter, Masondo played a central role in the formation of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as an integrated force serving the democratic state.

The country owes much to his undying commitment to a free and democratic society at peace with itself and the world.

The ANC extends its condolences to the Masondo family, and to his comrades, colleagues and friends.

His fighting spirit will live on in the struggle to build a better life for all.
