ANC STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF NCUMISA KONDLO

24 March 2008

It is with deep sadness and regret that the African National Congress announces the death in East London this morning (24 March 2008) of ANC National Executive Committee member Ncumisa Kondlo.

Kondlo, who also held the position of Deputy Chairperson of the South African Communist Party (SACP), was elected to the ANC NEC in December 2007, and served on the ANC National Working Committee (NWC).

Kondlo was recently appointed ANC Caucus Chairperson in Parliament, having previously served as MEC for Social Development in the Eastern Cape. Kondlo was a committed activist who cut her political teeth in student organisations and the labour movement.

Ncumisa Kondlo was an outstanding cadre, and highly regarded by her comrades and colleagues. Her election to important positions in both the ANC and SACP attests to the confidence that the members of the movement had in her abilities.

Prominent among a new generation of leaders, Ncumisa Kondlo will be sorely missed.

The ANC extends heartfelt condolences to her family and many friends, comrades and colleagues.
