African National Congress Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe held a meeting with Chief Justice Pius Langa and Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke in Johannesburg on the 15th January 2008.
This follows a letter to the Chief Justice regarding statements reported to have been made by Justice Moseneke at an event organised to celebrate his 60th birthday.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the ANC to raise the concerns expressed at a recent meeting of the ANC National Working Committee about a reference in Justice Moseneke's speech to the ANC and delegates.
Having listened to Justice Moseneke's account of his speech and the context of his remarks, the ANC accepts that no ill was intended.
The ANC confirms its confidence in the integrity of the Deputy Chief Justice, and reaffirms its confidence in the courts to uphold the law and safeguard the rights of all citizens.
