13 March 2004
It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that the African National Congress has learnt of the death this morning (13 March) of Dullah Omar, a son of the Cape and a hero of the nation.
A member of the ANC's National Executive Committee, Omar will be remembered for his modest demeanour, his intellect, compassion and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom in this country.
As a practising lawyer, Omar fought tirelessly for justice in an unjust legal system. He played a central role in the evolution of the country's constitution, and as South Africa's first democratically-elected Minister of Justice, Omar was responsible for overseeing the transformation of the country's judiciary.
He was a chairperson of the UDF in the Western Cape during the 1980s and in 1991 was elected to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
After the 1994 elections, Omar was elected to parliament and appointed Minister of Justice. After the 1999 elections he was appointed Minister of Transport.
The ANC joins all South Africans in mourning the loss of a remarkable leader, who was widely loved and respected.
We extend heartfelt sympathies to Dullah's wife, Farida, and their children. The thoughts and prayers of the nation are with them at this difficult time.
