Issued by African National Congress Parliament
27 November 2001
The African National Congress in Parliament mourns the passing of Comrade Joe Modise last evening.
South Africa has lost one of her finest sons whose unwavering commitment to the cause of liberation and transformation will remain an inspiration to us all.
Through his dedication and service, as commander of the people’s army Umkhonto we Sizwe, as a member of the National Executive and as the leader of the integration of the former liberation armies and the old SADF into a democratic national defence force, Comrade Modise leaves a legacy that will ensure that his name is honoured by generations to come.
As Members of Parliament, Cde JM will serve as a shining example to us of one who lived a life of dedication and service to democracy, to justice, to transformation and above all, to the people of the land he so loved.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Comrade Joe Modise.
We dip our revolutionary banner in honour of this great leader of our people.
