The African National Congress respects the decision of the Appeal Court which sentenced Dr Allan Boesak to three years imprisonment following an appeal against an earlier sentence of six years. The decision has been taken by an institution of integrity and we accept it.
We are, however, saddened by the fact that, a person of Dr Boesak's calibre, who made such a major contribution to the liberation struggle, which brought about the democratic dispensation that we enjoy today, should find himself in this unfortunate situation.
We want to assure Dr Boesak's family who never really spent any quality time with him due to his involvement in national issues, that the ANC will stand by them during the difficult times while their loved one is away.
We hope and trust that he will come back more prepared to rejoin and further strengthen our ranks, and continue to make a contribution to the transformation of our society and building of our nation.
