9 MAY 2000
The African National Congress wishes to express its outrage at the callous murder of Sowetan Sunday World sub-editor, Coletane Markham outside her home at the weekend.
We take this opportunity to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased journalist, as well as to her colleagues at Sowetan Sunday World. We wish to assure them that we share their grief and grave sense of loss.
It is always a severe blow when the community loses anyone of its members. But it is even more painful when the life lost is that of a journalist, especially at a time when our country needs the watchdog role of the media for checks and balances as we traverse this learning curve of transition from our sad past to a truly free and democratic order.
The role of journalists in a changing society can never be over-estimated and the loss of Coletane Markham, is one loss too many.
The most appropriate way of mourning her death is by making sure that what she stood for is advanced with renewed vigour. We appeal to the law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts in making sure that the perpetrator or perpetrators of this dastardly act are brought to book. May her soul rest in peace.
