THE NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE OF ANC ADOPTED A PLAN OF ACTION

May 3, 2000

The National Working Committee of the ANC this week adopted a plan of action by the organisation’s sub-committee on health which clearly spells out how ANC structures and members at all levels can effectively participate in the campaign against HIV-AIDS.

Although the details of the programme will be tabled before the National Executive Committee when it meets this weekend, the recommendations will include training to empower members to understand and be able to explain and meaningfully address issues relat ed to HIV-AIDS.There will be thorough-going discourse on the mattter at the ANC’s National General Council in Port Elizabeth in July.

The NWC also deliberated extensively on the criteria to be used in the appointment of executive mayors and a report on that will be presented to the National Executive Committee at this weekend’s meeting. Another issue discussed was that of illegal gun sal utes.

The NWC felt strongly about the increasing use of illegal gun salutes at funerals and agreed that no member of the public or of the ANC should take part in any form of illegal gun salutes, especially given the number of illegal firearms used in violent cri mes such as highjacking, murder and armed robbery. The meeting resolved that the ANC should call upon the Department of Safety and Security to clamp down on such practices and take appropriate action against anyone embarking on such unlawful activities.

After visiting several provinces, the NWC applied its mind to the general state of the organisation in the provinces so far visited. A report on their findings and recommendations will be tabled before the National Executive Committee when it meets at the weekend.
