Issued by African National Congress KwaZulu Natal
4 April 2000
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal province has welcomed the replacement of the Chatsworth Police station Senior Superintendent Mogambury Perumal who was declared unfit to command this station by the Provincial Commissioner Moses Khanyile, last night. His duties are now to be executed by Superintendent James Sayer who was based at Umlazi.
The ANC views Commissioner Khanyile's move in removing Perumal from his positions as revolutionary. There have been many alleged incidents of corruption at Chatsworth Police Station with no one prepared to attend to. Thus the whole Chatsworth area became ungovernable because the person who was supposed to attend to criminal activities in the area was alleged to be central in perpetrating them.
The ANC therefore calls upon Commissioner Khanyile to investigate the whole Chatsworth Police Station staff. We are of the view that there are other culprits that are still remaining in this police station.
We further applaud the intervention of the National Minister of Safety and Security and National Commissioner Jacky Selebi in this delicate matter. Without their meaningful intervention, we believe, the matter could not be resolved easily.
The ANC also commends the Deputy President Jacob Zuma for acknowledging that the Police Station in question was indeed anarchy and had to be attended to as a matter of urgency.
We view the removal of Perumal as the clear message to all those implicated to criminal activities that their nets is finally coming to an end; they must just declare their corrupt activities.
The ANC is of the view that both Commissioners will respond to many calls that are yet to come from community members who are dissatisfied by services they receive from Station Commanders throughout the province.
As the ANC, we shall always rally behind our Commissioners in their efforts to ventilate criminal activities in both the SAPS ranks and general communities.
