Issued by African National Congress
25 February 2000
The African National Congress wishes to extend a message of sympathy and good wishes to one of South Africa’s illustrious music stars, Yvonne Chakachaka who was injured in a car accident in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon.
We join all music lovers in general, and her fans in particular, to wish Yvonne a speedy recovery. We would like to assure her family that we share with them their sadness following the injury to their wife, mother and friend. We hope it will not be long before she is out of pain and can, once again, share happy times with them.
The accident highlights, once again, the need for all motorists on our roads to drive carefully and to strictly adhere to traffic rules and obey traffic signs. It (the accident) should serve as a wake-up call for us to realise that failure to observe traffic rules and obey road signs, can easily rob us of the cream of our society. As it is, we nearly lost not only a singer with a golden voice, but also someone who has contributed immensely in the development of our culture, and its promotion both nationally and internationally.
It is thanks to cultural ambassadors such as Yvonne, that South African culture is highly rated the world over. The sooner she jumps out of that sickbed, onto the stage where she belongs, the better for all of us.
