The African National Congress extends heartfelt condolences and support to families, dependants and friends of those South Africans who lost their lives in the floods that ravaged parts of the country over the past few days.
It is with a great sense of loss that were share their grief and sorrow at this critical moment when they mourn their loved ones whose untimely, accidental deaths caught many unprepared for the bereavement.
Over and above the blow caused by the loss of loved ones, the suddenness and the unpreparedness add to the pain and sorrow, and demand that all of us give as much support to the bereaved as we possibly can to soothe those bleeding hearts in this hour of need. This is one time when our consciences must be pricked by these poor people's untold suffering. Their plight is such that no amount of assistance coming their way can be too much.
We appeal to communities, non-governmental organisations, individuals and the business sector to come to the aid of those who have been left homeless, and whose entire belongings have been swept away by the raging flood waters. The victims of this natural disaster are desperately in need of food, clothing, blankets, shelter and medical assistance, as their health would have been adversely affected by the hostile weather conditions. Such assistance would go a long way in complementing what the relevant Government Department would provide within available resources. We hope our security forces, especially the National Defence Force, will live up to their proud reputation and assist those left destitute. Disasters such as this one demand that all South Africans come together across the spectrum, put aside whatever differences they may have, and together assist these unfortunate victims.
Our hearts also go out to the hundreds of thousands of citizens of Mozambique who were also left homeless when their villages and homes were flooded.
