THE RESCUE OF MINERS AT ARM MINE

Issued by African National Congress

14 January 2000

The African National Congress celebrates with the families of those miners who survived the ordeal after being trapped in the African Rainbow Minerals mine at Orkney over the past four days.

We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of those who died. While no compensation can ever replace the lives of these loved ones we hope that the mining company will compensate the affected families sufficiently for the loss of these breadwinners.

The ANC further holds out hope for those still unaccounted for.

We salute the commitment and selflessness of the Minister, Cde. Pumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, mining officials such as Mr Patrice Matsipe, labour representatives and miners who stayed on site for almost the duration of this calamity.

The ANC is heartened by the solidarity shown by all concerned especially the miners and in particular the rescue teams that worked around the clock to try and save their colleagues. This is a lesson for various sectors of our society, and shows that if we work together we can overcome all of our difficulties and challenges as a nation.

Further, the ANC appreciates the concern shown by the entire nation – their prayers and spiritual support is indicative of a new patriotism at work within the country.
