THE APPOINTMENT OF NEW SAPS CHIEF FOR KWAZULU-NATAL

12 January 2000

The ANC in Kwazulu-natal congratulates Commissioner Moses Khanyile for his appointment as the head of the SAPS in the province.

The ANC believes that Commissioner Khanyile is the most suitable and experienced appointee for this position. He filed through the ranks of the police in the province. He has personal experience of being discriminated against because of his skin colour. That experience must have prepared him to use his position to deal a blow to racism so rampant in the SAPS especially in Kwazulu-natal. The major challenges facing Commissioner Khanyile are:

1. Ensuring that the SAPS reflects the demographics of KZN in that it becomes representative. He must do something to promote efficient and competent Africans and female police officers.

2. The exposure and the elimination of corruption in the SAPS in the province.

3. To effectively combat crime including political violence.

4. To raise the moral of ordinary police officers.

5. To ensure that Community Policing Forums are spread all over the province and work efficiently.

The ANC calls upon the peace loving people of Kwazulu-natal across the political spectrum to support Commissioner khanyile and the SAPS in general to deal a final blow to the culture of impunity and crime in general.
