RASOOL SAYS VOTERS MUST KNOW WHETHER ABE WILLIAMS WILL BE CHARGED BEFORE JUNE 2

Issued by the ANC D.I.P. Western Cape

The people of the Western Cape, and in particular the people of Atlantis, Mamre, Saldanha and the West Coast, have a right to know before they can vote again on Wednesday, 2 June 1999, if their candidate, Mr Abe Williams, is going to have criminal charges laid against him. Mr Abe Williams is number 10 on the NP's national list of candidates.

Mr Rasool said:

"They need to know if the investigation by the Office for Serious Economic Offences is now complete, bearing in mind that this matter was investigated for more than three years.

If so, what charges were investigated?

Has a decision been made to prosecute Abe Williams or not?

If so, what is that decision?

If he is going to be charged, what are the charges going to be?

What is the full extent of the alleged crimes?

When will he be charged?

Why has he not been charged yet?

We request that the National Director of Prosecutions respond to these questions as a matter of urgency and in the interest of the public, before they vote on 2 June 1999.

The ANC is committed to weeding out all crime, including crimes of corruption and dishonesty."
