The ANC in Gauteng welcomes the decision of the Magistrate's Court for the district of Alberton, to issue an interim order against the UDM as regards its conduct in Greenfields.
We call on the UDM to take necessary steps to ensure that all political parties are able to conduct their campaigns in Greenfields without any intimidation or hindrance. The UDM should restrain its supporters to allow other parties to canvass support, erect placards and posters and distribute election materials in the area of Greenfields.
The UDM should distance itself from criminal elements in the area that are stopping the development of Greenfields into a formal residential area of Alberton. Greenfields has been plagued by criminal violence since 1997 and the ANC believes that the development of Greenfields into a formal residential area with tenants, street names and addresses will assist the police to conduct necessary investigation in the area.
Local government has been unable to proceed with development in the are since intimidation and violence besieged the area. The 147 displaced families and other individuals must return back to their homes and Greenfields must be a place of peace, where individuals must return back to their homes and Greenfields must be a place of peace, where individuals and families are able to express their political believes without restrain by the UDM or any other organisation.
