Issued by the ANC D.I.P. Western Cape
ANC premier candidate, Ebrahim Rasool, joined by Justice Minister Dullah Omar and Women's League Chairperson, Nomatyala Hangana, addressed a crowd of more than 3000 at the Toekomsrus Civic in Oudtshoorn. The capacity crowd not only comprised of party faithfuls, but also consisted of a large majority of undecided voters. The theme of the evening was "how can you vote for a party who voted against you?" Nomatyala Hangana made reference to the ANC's commitment to gender equality while Justice Minister Omar reminded everyone that they should not forget that the NP used the coloured vote to retain privileges for a few. He also spoke about the ANC's commitment in passing legislation to better the life of farm workers. Mr. Rasool continued with the theme and reminded everyone that the NP is still the same old party which turns a blind eye to racism, still prevalent in the Western Cape.
Mr. Rasool further stated:
"The NP voted against every piece of legislation, like the Employment Equity and the Extension of Security of Tenure Acts, which the ANC has introduced to secure the rights of everyone, not just a privileged few.
"Within the legislature the NP has acted more like an opposition party even though they mandated to govern this province."
"In the 1994 election the NP used 'swart gevaar' tactics, but since they and other parties have nothing else to campaign about, they are now resorting to using the 'two-thirds gevaar' and the 'moving parliament gevaar'."
"The people of the Western Cape, especially the coloured communities are sick and tired of the racism which still exist. They are sick and tired of an NP provincial government which has done nothing in their 5 years of governing this province to better the lives of our people."
"The wheels of the NP are coming off and people in the Western Cape are ready for change. A change for a better future, a better life. It is clear that Oudtshoorn wants to give the ANC a chance to govern the Western Cape."
