Today the Gauteng Province welcomed the 200 former members of the New National Party to the ranks of the ANC. These members led by former NNP MP Maggie Ratsoma, are joining ANC branches in the Shoshanguve areas. This mass defection of NNP members spells the end of the road for the so-called new National Party.
More members are certainly going to leave in droves because the leadership of the NNP cannot punter to its old guard rightwing members and still pretend to be a home for the previously disadvantaged. South Africa needs political parties that inspire hope for the future. Voters are not interested in the gloom and doom preached by the NNP and other opposition parties like the Democratic Party.
The NNP has no future in South Africa's young democracy. This country has come a long way to much remains to be done to mop-up the Nats's apartheid mess. Over the past years the ANC-led government has swept away racist and oppressive laws and has put in place a constitutional democracy were equality and justice for all prevails.
