ANC WESTERN CAPE INTENSIFIES ITS CAMPAIGN

Issued by the ANC D.I.P. Western Cape

The ANC Western Cape is intensifying its campaign to ensure free and fair elections throughout the Western Cape over this weekend.

In addition to the normal canvassing work, public meetings, street meetings and house meetings captured in our "up-close and personal" style of campaigning, the ANC will be distributing over 100000 pamphlets to its members and supporters, calling on them to abide by the electoral code of conduct and the provisions of the electoral act.

Workshops have been held over the last two months with ANC party agents and branch election coordinators. Guiding this approach is the ANC's commitment to ensure that all parties have an absolute right of access to every corner of the province.

This weekend, ANC Chairperson and Premier Elect, Ebrahim Rasool, and Chief Whip, Tony Yengeni and NEC members will be visiting Vrygrond at 12h30 on Saturday, starting from the Vrygrond creche. At 13h30, they will proceed to the Nyanga constituency office of ANC MPL, Roseberry Sonto.

Commenting on this initiative, Mr Rasool said:

"A free and fair election is something that all of us must make a reality. No effort must be spared to ensure compliance with the code of conduct. We need to deal firmly with individuals, inside or outside our ranks, who in any way compromise the attainment of this goal.

"Today, the ANC's representative on the provincial party liaison committee, advocate Johnny de Lange, submitted a dossier to the IEC containing at least 7 incidents where ANC posters were removed or defaced by identified NP and DP members. Mr De Lange requested the IEC to urgently take steps to ensure compliance with the Electoral Act and Electoral Code of Conduct. The ANC will also be following up charges that have been laid with the police to ensure that these are speedily dealt with

"In addition to our canvassing work this weekend, all of our leaders will take the message of free and fair elections to our members and supporters as we campaign over this weekend. The 100 000 pamphlets we will be distributing contain the do's and don't's in the electoral code of conduct. Our appeal is for all parties to do the same.

"Our call to our members is: 'DON'T PROVOKE AND DON'T BE PROVOKED'."
