Issued by ANC D.I.P. Western Cape
Ebrahim Rasool, ANC premier candidate for the Western Cape, said today that the ANC is encouraged by the show of confidence from the people of Blaauwberg, Atlantis. The ANC had set its sights on increasing our number of votes. We have achieved this. The ANC gained 37% of the votes, increasing our majority by 15%.
Mr. Ebrahim Rasool further stated:
"We should put the by-election in context. In 1996 the ANC had only 22% of the votes. Yesterday we increased our votes by 15% to 37% while the NP has lost more than 10% of their votes.
"The support base of the NP is crumbling and the ANC is making significant strides into traditional NP strongholds. Most significantly, organised workers have clearly shifted to the ANC.
"If this trend continues, and given that the ANC has won the registration campaign, the ANC is well set for an election victory in the Western Cape."
