EBRAHIM RASOOL COMMENTS ON OPINION POLL CONDUCTED BY THE INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS GROUP

Mr Ebrahim Rasool, Chairperson of the ANC Western Cape commented today on the opinion poll conducted by Independent Newspapers on the coloured community's political support. He stated that:

"The ANC is reasonably satisfied with the outcome of the survey conducted in Bonteheuwel and Bishop Lavis. The outcome confirms the correctness of the strategy of the ANC in trying to win the trust and confidence of the coloured community.

"The results of the survey should be very worrying to the NP their support shows a significant fall in the NP support from the 1994 election, confirming the crumbling of the NP support base. On the other hand the ANC support is holding.

"The important feature of the survey is that the defections have created great doubt and uncertainty among the coloured communities to the extent that they don't see the NP anymore as caring for the coloured community.

"This great undecided factor shows that ground has been loosened and the ANC is correct in its approach of meeting people at their doors and winning their trust.

"Our experience in the last weeks has shown that when we meet people - up close and personal - they are willing to make their conversion to the ANC complete".
