The ANC in KwaZulu Natal has noted the report of the Sunday Tribune about the so-called impending arrests of among others Dr Zweli Mkhize, ANC provincial Deputy-Chairperson and MEC for Health, by the Special Investigating Unit. The ANC detects some sinister motive behind the report. The ANC is certain that the report was not done by Thami Ngidi as it appears in the paper. It was written by two controversial white journalists who allegedly had strong links to the sinister apartheid security forces. That is the reason why they did not use their names in the front page article.
Unfortunately, this link between elements within the Special Investigating Unit and these two journalists may lead to the conclusion that the Unit is infiltrated by Third Force elements. This may reduce the confidence our people have had on this unit. The ANC calls upon the Minister of Safety and Security, Sydney Mufamadi, to take all necessary steps to ensure that this Unit is cleaned of all possible Third Force infiltration.
The ANC is deeply worried by the Sunday Tribune report which will seem to prejudice and pre-empt the police investigations. The ANC believes that the report is highly irresponsible.
The ANC will accept and co-operate fully with any investigation that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of violence be it political or criminal. The ANC believes that nobody is above the law. That is the reason why the ANC is on record requesting that a Commission of Inquiry be instituted to investigate all allegations from the TRC, courts or any other allegation linking any politician to political murders and violence irrespective of the position the suspect holds.
However, the ANC must remain vigilant that its leaders are not investigated, arrested and charged on trumped up charges to try and balance the investigation on well known warlords in other political parties even if there is nothing linking ANC members with any crime. Of course, if there is any prima facie evidence against ANC members or leaders, the law will take its course.
It is also disturbing that the report tries to equate Dr Mkhize with Phillip Powell. With Phillip Powell there are tangible things that must be investigated such as the six truck loads of weapons allegedly sent to him by the convicted mass murderer, Col Eugene de Kock and Powell's role in the Pomeroy saga.
The ANC also hopes that the so-called investigation against Dr Mkhize is not aimed at allaying the fears of the IFP which has complained about the police raid at the homestead of IFP MEC for Safety and Security, Chief Nyanga Ngubane. In this raid at least one illegal fire-arm was found and the ANC is expecting that a charge will be laid.
The ANC is convinced that Dr Zweli or any other ANC leader is not involved in any crime. That would be against the very grain of the ANC policy.
