ANC STATEMENT ON THE DP's DIRTY CAMPAIGN

Issued by African National Congress

The DP's latest disparaging attack on the ANC is consistent with the party's strategy of disinformation aimed at damaging the good name of the ANC. The DP is ably assisted in its disinformation campaign by certain who appear to be ready to publish anything the opposition say about the ANC even if they know it is a lie.

On Tuesday 30 March 1999 the DP released a list of ANC members it claims are not fit to hold public office. Serious allegations were made against the ANC members without substantiation. Some of the people the DP alleges are corrupt have been cleared of any wrong doing but the DP, with the assistance of some unscrupulous media continue to spread false allegations against them.

Any credible journalist or editor would have known that Baleka Kgositsile has been cleared of any wrong doing before publishing the DP's false allegations.

The ANC has full confidence in the structures it has mandated to finalise the candidates list. Unfortunately the ANC cannot put Tony Leon or any other member of the DP on its list.

The Democratic Party would be best advised to spend its energy attending to its own candidates list than speading lies about the ANC.

The ANC appeals to the media not to be part of the opposition's dirty campaigning.
