RAPPORT ARTICLE REGARDING CHRIS HANI

Issued by: African National Congress

The ANC has taken note of Rapport's article regarding some aspects of the murder of Chris Hani. The ANC is of the view that the matter of Chris Hani's murder remains a subject of TRC's Amnesty Committee hearings. We call on all those in possession of any relevant information regarding this matter to come forward to testify before the Amnesty Committee.

We reject the suggestion in Rapport's article thaa the ANC and the SACP reached different conclusions on the nature of the murder. There was only one investigation, led by the ANC on behalf of the entire alliance structures. This investigation arrived at the conclusion that the file on the murder of Chris Hani should not be closed and that investigations must continue around the area of possible wider conspiracy.

It is in this context that Deputy President Tabo Mbeki in May this year had called on the TRC to reopen investigations into the matter and even up to this day the ANC continues to co-operate with the TRC investigation team.

It will be unfortunate if the Rapport article were to be percived by the broader public to be either an attempt to cast an aspersion on the integrity, name and reputation of national hero of Chris Hani's repute who is not in a position to answer to any alegations levelled against him or an attempt to unduly influence the outcome of the forthcoming hearing of Waluz and Derby-Lewis.

The ANC challenges Rapport to make witnesses relevant to this matter available to the TRC rathern than hide behind faceles sources.
