The National Working Committee (NWC) of the African National Congress (ANC) met yesterday, November 1, 1994 and considered the unacceptable situation that continues to dog the process of the transformation of the SANDF.
The NWC strongly urged the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Council, as a matter of urgency, to solve all the problems that have led to the unstable situation, especially at Walmanstal. At the same time, the NWC expressed itself strongly against the sustained indiscipline displayed by some former members of uMkhonto We Sizwe. It considered this behaviour totally unacceptable.
Those who willfully absent themselves from the SANDF without permission must bear the full consequence of their illegal action. Accordingly those who did not return to base by the date set by the President, should be considered as having resigned from the SADF. Those who left in the last few days without authorisation must return witin this week. Those who do not return within this week, should also be considered as having resigned from the SANDF.
Furthermore, the SANDF must take firm disciplinary action against all those who abandoned their units without authorisation and prefer charges against anybody who might have violated the military code.
The ANC at all its levels is determined to play its role to ensure that the transformation of state institutions is not disrupted either by those who wish to resist change or those who want to impose anarchy on this process.
