INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES, SEMINARS AND OTHER EVENTS AGAINST APARTHEID, 1964-1994

Compiled by E. S. Reddy

NOTE

During the decades-long international campaign against apartheid, thousands of conferences, seminars and other events were organised around the world to inform the public about the inhumanity of apartheid and the struggle for liberation of South Africa, to declare solidarity with the struggling people of South Africa, to promote boycotts of apartheid South Africa and support to the national liberation movement, and to demand that governments of the world take steps to terminate all relations with the apartheid regime and assist the victims of and fighters against apartheid.

This document contains a fairly complete list of conferences or other events organised or co-sponsored by the United Nations and related agencies - marked with an asterisk - and only a fraction of other conferences and events. It lists only conferences where the struggle against apartheid was the sole or a major item on the agenda. It will be supplemented from time to time.

This list does not include the numerous meetings and other events held on international days proclaimed by the United Nations - the Sharpeville Day (21 March), the Soweto Day (16 June), women’s day (9 August) and the Day of Solidarity with South African political prisoners (11 October) - for mobilisation against apartheid. Nor does it include the great number of events held on the 60th and 70th birthdays of Nelson Mandela.

It does not include conferences of the ANC or other South African organisations, except those organised or co-sponsored with other bodies to promote the solidarity movement.

Reference is given to the reports or declarations of the conferences, especially in United Nations documents, wherever possible.

It is hoped that this list, though far from complete, would be useful for those studying the international campaign for the liberation of South Africa.
