Statement by the Gauteng Provincial Government on the death of Walter Sisulu

Issued by Mbhazima Shilowa, Premier of Gauteng

6 May 2003

The Gauteng Provincial Government adds its voice to those of South Africans and democrats all over the world in mourning the death of one of the founding giants of the country's freedom struggle, Walter Sisulu.

We were privileged to have had the opportunity to honour this icon of our struggle when we launched the Kliptown Urban Renewal Project on the anniversary of the Freedom Charter on 26 June last year. In celebration of his life, we will ensure that the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, which forms part of the Kliptown Project, is indeed completed in remembrance of the selfless and unwavering contribution he made as a leader of the struggle for non-racialism and democracy in our country.

Walter Sisulu may have departed but he has left us a legacy which will live on in the millions who continue to defend and advance the freedoms for which he stood. The best way we can pay tribute to Walter Sisulu is by intensifying our efforts to better the lives of all our people.

The Gauteng Provincial Government offers its condolences to his family, friends and comrades. Words alone cannot describe the feelings of the loss Comrade Walter Sisulu to Gauteng and the country as a whole.

We are however hopeful that you will draw strength from the knowledge that his contribution was not in vain.

May his soul rest in peace.
