The PE Technikon as a community is greatly saddened by the loss of one of SA's and particularly Port Elizabeth's, greatest citizens, Archibald Mvunyelwa Govan Mbeki. The transformation to a peaceful, democratic and equitable South Africa, can largely be attributed to the important role he played as architect and catalyst of change.
The 14 years of freedom in the latter part of his life, closely paralleled the transformation of the PE Technikon. "In our interaction with this soft-spoken, intellectual gentleman, we were always given sustenance and guidance in working towards the strong ideals he held for our country. His interaction with students was particularly impressive and he always conveyed the importance of education, particularly in the fields of science and technology. Whilst imprisoned on Robben Island, Govan pursued his ideals of life-long learning by reading towards his honours degree when already in his 40's. Let his ideals and actions serve as an example to all South Africans," said Professor Hennie Snyman, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
"I was extremely fortunate to meet him on several occasions to discuss matters relating to higher education and fondly remember the first congress of the ANC in the Eastern Cape. On speaking to him a mere two weeks ago, I was once again touched by the positive outlook on the future of this country."
